Why Weekly Mowing Beats Bi-Weekly Every Time

One of the most common questions we get from new clients is: "Can I save money by going bi-weekly instead of weekly?" It's a fair question, but the answer almost always favors weekly service — and here's why.

The One-Third Rule

The golden rule of lawn mowing is to never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. This rule exists because cutting more than a third stresses the grass, weakens the root system, and leaves your lawn vulnerable to disease, weeds, and heat damage.

During the growing season in North Texas (roughly April through October), Bermuda grass can grow 1 to 2 inches per week. If you're mowing weekly at 2 inches, you're removing about half an inch to an inch — well within the one-third rule.

With bi-weekly service, that same grass has grown 2 to 4 inches. Cutting it back to 2 inches means you're removing 50-66% of the blade — far exceeding the one-third rule and shocking the grass every time.

What Happens When You Cut Too Much

When you violate the one-third rule consistently (as bi-weekly mowing inevitably does during the growing season), several problems develop:

Scalp damage: Removing too much blade exposes the stem and crown of the grass to direct sunlight, causing brown spots and thin areas.

Weed invasion: Stressed, thin grass can't compete with weeds. Bi-weekly lawns almost always have more weed problems than weekly-maintained lawns.

Clumping: Bi-weekly mowing produces massive amounts of clippings that clump on the lawn surface, smothering the grass underneath and creating brown patches.

Root stress: The grass plant diverts energy from root growth to blade regrowth after a severe cut, resulting in a shallow root system that's more vulnerable to drought and heat.

The Weekly Advantage

Weekly mowing produces a consistently healthy, attractive lawn because:

  • Each cut removes a small amount of growth, keeping the grass within its optimal height range
  • Fine clippings decompose quickly and return nutrients to the soil (natural fertilization)
  • Regular visits allow your lawn care team to spot problems early — disease, pest damage, irrigation issues
  • The lawn maintains a uniform, manicured appearance throughout the week

The Cost Perspective

While bi-weekly service costs less per month, the total cost of ownership is often higher:

  • More weed treatments needed due to thin, stressed turf
  • Potential re-sodding costs if the lawn deteriorates significantly
  • Lower curb appeal and property value
  • More water needed because stressed grass with shallow roots requires more irrigation

Our weekly maintenance plans are designed to be affordable while delivering the consistent care your lawn needs. We offer tiered plans (Silver, Gold, and Platinum) to fit different budgets and property needs.

Electric Equipment Makes Weekly Service Better

At Go Green Electric, our battery-powered mowers are lighter than gas equivalents, which means less soil compaction from weekly visits. Our equipment also produces a cleaner cut with less tearing, which reduces disease risk — especially important when you're mowing every week.

Plus, our quiet electric equipment means weekly visits don't disrupt your household. You might not even notice we're there.
