Fall Is Your Lawn's Second Chance

If summer was tough on your lawn — and in North Texas, it usually is — fall is your opportunity to repair the damage and set your grass up for a strong start next spring. The cooler temperatures and more consistent rainfall create ideal conditions for lawn recovery, and the steps you take between September and November directly impact how your lawn looks next April.

Here's your complete fall lawn care checklist for the Rockwall and East Dallas suburbs area.

September: Transition Month

Apply fall pre-emergent (early September): This is your window to prevent winter annual weeds like henbit, chickweed, and annual bluegrass. Apply before soil temperatures drop below 70°F. This application is just as important as your spring pre-emergent.

Resume normal watering: After a summer of conservation and restrictions, fall is the time to ensure your lawn is getting adequate moisture. Water deeply once or twice per week as temperatures moderate.

Continue regular mowing: Your lawn will experience a growth surge as temperatures cool. Maintain your regular mowing schedule and begin gradually lowering the cutting height back toward spring levels.

Fertilize: Apply a fall fertilizer with a balanced nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium ratio. This feeds the root system as it prepares for winter dormancy and stores energy for spring green-up.

October: Recovery and Repair

Aerate if needed: October is the ideal time for core aeration in North Texas. The soil is still warm enough for root growth, and the reduced heat stress allows the lawn to recover quickly from aeration. Focus on high-traffic areas and spots where water tends to pool.

Address bare spots: Overseed bare areas or lay sod patches while the soil is still warm. Bermuda grass needs soil temperatures above 65°F to establish, so don't wait too long.

Adjust irrigation schedules: As temperatures drop and evaporation decreases, reduce your watering frequency. Most North Texas lawns need about 0.5 to 0.75 inches of water per week in October.

Clean up flower beds: Remove spent annuals, add fresh mulch, and plant cool-season flowers like pansies and ornamental kale for winter color.

November: Winterization

Final mowing: Your last mow of the season should be at a slightly lower height than normal — about 1.5 inches for Bermuda. This reduces the amount of dead material that accumulates during dormancy and makes spring scalping easier.

Winterize irrigation: Drain your sprinkler system or have it professionally blown out to prevent freeze damage. Even in North Texas, we get hard freezes that can crack pipes and damage valves.

Leaf removal: Don't let fallen leaves smother your lawn. A thick layer of leaves blocks sunlight and traps moisture, creating conditions for fungal disease. Remove leaves weekly throughout fall.

Apply winterizer fertilizer: A late-fall potassium-heavy fertilizer strengthens cell walls and improves cold tolerance. Apply after the last mowing but before the first hard freeze.

The Fall Advantage for Next Spring

Every item on this checklist serves a dual purpose — it helps your lawn survive winter AND gives it a head start in spring. A lawn that enters dormancy healthy, well-fed, and weed-free will green up faster, grow thicker, and require less corrective work when warm weather returns.
